ICNCLST/ presents CONTROL Gallery
CONTROL Gallery and BEYOND THE STREETS Flagship open their doors for the first time with the debut of POST GRAFFITI, an inaugural exhibition that tells the visual story of the graffiti revolution, through the early ambitions of artists like FUTURA2000, CRASH, Eric HAZE, LADY PINK and Kenny Scharf, who laid the groundwork for the movement – to the artists of the present who draw energy from the international community of graffiti writing and street culture. CONTROL Gallery is a collaboration between ICNCLST and Beyond the Streets.
POST GRAFFITI is anchored by a virtuoso ensemble of celebrated artists that include Blake Kunin, CHITO, Conor Harrington, CRASH, Eric HAZE, Felipe Pantone, FUTURA2000, Gregory Rick, Katsu, Kenny Scharf, LADY PINK, Madsaki, Maya Hayuk, Nehemiah Cisneros, Ozzie Jaurez, Othelo Gervacio, Paul Flores, Paul Insect, POSE, Timothy Curtis, and Todd James.
“I’m fortunate to have witnessed the evolution of my peers from the NY train yards to those early gallery shows in the 70-80’s and take part in that movement myself. It’s equally exciting to watch that same journey being made years later with other artists and take part in graffiti’s decades-long influence on contemporary art.” - says esteemed graffiti artist, CRASH.
The artists of POST GRAFFITI continue to embrace all that has come before. They incorporate technology, the internet, fashion, film, photography, and often use new techniques to apply to the original spray can art foundations. KATSU uses drones to paint tags. Felipe Pantone makes interactive, Op-Art installations that channel the use of spray paint.
POST GRAFFITI will showcase the work of those who risked it all to leave their imprint on culture and the ones who continue to revolutionize the art form today. Some continue to utilize letter-based graphics, while others create figurative and abstract forms, but all use the mediums of drawing, painting, sculpture or installation to blur and elevate their source inspiration— graffiti.
